Hosts Bahrain will take on Korea in one of Monday’s semifinals at the AVC Men’s Volleyball Nations Cup in Manama. The other one will offer a remake of last year’s final between Qatar and Pakistan. These four teams emerged victorious from Saturday’s quarterfinals, while on Friday, Thailand shut out the Philippines in the first game of the three-way race for the ninth place. In the most interesting quarterfinal, defending champions Qatar achieved a rollercoaster 3-2 (29-31, 25-21, 25-15, 22-25, 15-12) victory over Vietnam. While Qatar’s middle blocker Belal Nabel Abunabot put up a fascinating eight kill blocks and outside hitters Raimi Wadidie and Ribeiro Renan impressed with five aces and five kill blocks, respectively, opposite Youssef Oughlaf shared the top scorer honors with Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Van Quoc Duy on 22 points each.

Pakistan outblocked Indonesia on the way to a 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-17) comeback win. They were led by outside hitter and captain Murad Jehan with 20 points, while Indonesia’s opposite Rivan Nurmulki produced a match-high 22 points.

Korea also beat Australia in four sets, 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23), although the Aussies did much better in their blocking effort with 15-6 in stuffs. Outside Subong Heo was Korea’s best scorer with 18 points, while Australia’s 22-year-old opposite William D'Arcy-Miles was the best scorer of the match with 29 points.

Hosts Bahrain swept the last quarterfinal with a hard-fought 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 35-33) shutout of Chinese Taipei. Opposite Ali Khamis Ebrahim authored four of Bahrain’s 16 kill blocks in the match and put away two aces to lead his team with 17 points. His counterpart Chang Yu-Sheng delivered a match-high 20 points for Chinese Taipei.

The three-team round-robin for the distribution of the places from ninth to 11th in the final standings started on Friday evening with Thailand’s 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-18) straight-set win over the Philippines, with a match-high 14 points from opposite and captain Amornthep Khonhan.

Thailand could secure the ninth place on Sunday, as they take on New Zealand. Later in the day, Chinese Taipei will meet Australia and Indonesia will face Vietnam in the fifth-place classification semifinals.

The semifinal between Bahrain and Korea will start at 16:30 local time (13:30 UTC) on Monday, followed by Pakistan and Qatar at 19:00 (16:00).
