In the first semifinal on Monday, a remake of last year’s AVC Challenge Cup final, Pakistan took their revenge from Qatar with a convincing 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-21) sweep. Outside hitter Usman Faryad Ali led the way with 18 points, including one kill block. His cross-court teammate and team captain Murad Jehan added another 16, all in swings. Their counterpart Raimi Wadidie was Qatar’s leading scorer with 14 points, while opposite Youssef Oughlaf finished with 11.

A spectacular five-set battle unfolded in the second semifinal. Korea came back from two sets down against Bahrain, but stopped short of completing a full turnaround as the home side took the tie-breaker to celebrate a 3-2 (25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 18-25, 15-13) victory. Bahrain’s outside Mohamed Abdulla Yaqoob was the best scorer of the match with 19 points, including three aces and two kill blocks. Opposite Ali Khamis Ebrahim and outside and captain Naser Anan added 16 and 14 points, respectively, while middle blockers Hasan Warqaa Ali and Mohamed Abdulla also reached the double digits with 10 points apiece. Korea’s opposite Hojin Shin scored a team-high 18 points, supported by outside hitters Jihan Kim with 17 and Subong Heo with 16.

Before the final between Pakistan and Bahrain on Tuesday, Qatar and Korea will lock horns for the bronze at 15:00 (12:00). And before that, at 12:00 (09:00), the Philippines and New Zealand will take to the court in a battle for 10th place.

The places from fifth to ninth were already distributed on the previous days. On Monday, Australia mastered a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22) shutout of Indonesia in the fifth-place match, while Chinese Taipei produced a 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22) win over Vietnam for the seventh place. Thailand finished their participation in the tournament on Sunday with a second straight-set win in the three-way race for the ninth place. This time they hammered out a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 27-25) victory over New Zealand.
